When I have a slow morning, I brew a special Vietnamese coffee in my favorite porcelain cup and have a moment to myself, looking out the window at the Palm Jumeirah and skydivers jumping over it. It’s a moment that I have to myself where I am able to empty my mind before the day takes over.

Thinking back over the years, when I was rushing to work, whether in Dubai, Bangkok or Krakow, I always had a consistent coffee prep routine or a place I would get it from. The moral of the story is that life is usually filled with change and unforeseeable events. Finding stability and a constant can seem like an elusive goal. However, amidst the chaos, there are ways to discover grounding and maintain your sense of balance. This is especially important when going through transitions or being in circumstances that exacerbate our anxiety.

Embrace Uncertainty:

The first step towards finding grounding in unstable circumstances is to acknowledge that uncertainty is a natural part of life. Embrace it as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat to your stability. Accepting that not everything can be controlled is the first step toward inner peace. In situations where we feel like our minds are spinning out of control, it can be helpful to write down a list of things that I am able to control and things that I cannot.

Mindfulness and Meditation:

Practicing mindfulness and meditation can be powerful tools in finding grounding. For some people, this can be just focusing on your breath; for some, it may be prayer or even a mundane task we fully focus on, like ironing clothes. The focus maintained in these practices encourages you to stay present in the moment, helping you detach from the worries of the past and future. By focusing on your breath and sensations, you can find solace in the here and now.

Maintain a Routine:

In times of upheaval, maintaining a daily routine can provide a comforting sense of stability. Like my morning coffee, simple habits like waking up and going to bed at the same time, having regular meals, and setting aside time for exercise or relaxation can help anchor you during turbulent times.

Build the Trait of Adaptability:

One of the most effective ways to find grounding in instability is by developing adaptability. Instead of resisting change, learn to embrace it and adjust your plans as necessary. Flexibility can empower you to confront challenges head-on and thrive in ever-changing environments.

Finding grounding in unstable circumstances may not happen overnight. Be patient with yourself and understand that it’s okay to have moments of doubt or anxiety. Progress may be gradual, but with time and effort, you can build a stronger foundation for stability.
